Kate Helwig – Executive Director, Sister Cities of Newport News

Point Blank

Three things that make me a good friend are I’m loyal, I don’t gossip and I’ll watch your kids and your animals like they are my own.

The way I make Newport News a better place to live is by showing off our city to the world, promoting Newport News to our “Sister Cities” (Japan, Germany, China and France) across the globe.

The accomplishment I am most proud of in my life is raising three children to be loving, productive members of society.

The field of study in which I am most interested is law and accounting.

When I was a child, I wanted to grow up to be a lobbyist.

The luckiest I have ever felt is when I finished the “One City Marathon.”

If I am not working, I can usually be found at home with my husband Hobie, cooking, cleaning or writing the minutes or a budget for some organization.

The most impressive feat I have ever witnessed is watching my daughter swim the mile in 18:49. (That’s minutes and seconds!)

My favorite sports team is The University of Alabama – Roll Tide!

My favorite holiday is THANKSGIVING because I have a lot to be
thankful for.

If I could be a TV or movie character, I would be Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) because my movie/TV repertoire is not very deep!

When people think of me, I hope they think “she’s kind and full of life.”

My role model is my childhood neighbor, Peggy Bowditch. I love the way she raised her boys and loved her husband, John. From an early age, I admired how she could be both a gracious host and the smartest lady in the room.

My greatest fear is not getting all my work done.

The best advice I have ever received is “you can’t make someone else ‘do’ something; you can only make yourself ‘do’ something.”
