Newport News Public Schools update – December 2020

Mayor’s Book Club helps young readers start their own personal libraries

Imani Gill, a student at Watkins Early Childhood Center, was happy to receive books to keep from the Mayor’s Book Club.

Since 2011, the Mayor’s Book Club has provided Newport News students with books they may keep forever.

In September, pre-kindergarten students received copies of A Pocket for Corduroy, What Does It Mean to Be Green? and The Doorbell Rang.

The students will receive an additional book each month over the course of the school year.

Newport News Public Library is providing recordings of each book on its web page. Viewers may enjoy Cynthia Temple, youth and community engagement manager, reading
