Newport News Public Schools – Update February 2022

Warwick High School hosts state legislators

To mark Take Your Legislator to School Day, General Assembly members visited Warwick High School to learn details about school building needs included in the Newport News Public Schools Capital Improvement Plan and the legislative positions adopted by the School Board for the 2022 General Assembly session.

School Board Chair Douglas Brown, Superintendent Dr. George Parker and Warwick Principal Dr. Kellie Mason welcomed Senator Monty Mason, Delegate Mike Mullin, City Councilman David Jenkins, School Board Vice Chair Lisa Surles-Law and School Board Member Gary Hunter.

Aides to Delegate Shelly Simonds, Delegate Marcia Price and Senator Mamie Locke and several members of the Newport News Education Foundation also attended.

After hearing from current and recently graduated students of the program, the highlight of the event was a quick visit to classrooms in the Governor’s Health Sciences Academy at Warwick High School, where visitors observed a forensic science scene, a dissection lab and a state-of-the-art virtual dissection table.

The group left with a clearer understanding of the specific needs of schools and an appreciation for the innovative methods being used to prepare students for future careers.
