Newport News Schools Earn Exemplar Performance School Awards
Newport News Public Schools (NNPS) earned six Virginia Board of Education Exemplar Performance School Awards for high student achievement or continuous improvement. The awards program recognizes schools for exceeding state accreditation standards, narrowing achievement gaps and improving outcomes for students.
Deer Park Elementary School and General Stanford Elementary School earned the 2019 Board of Education Highest Achievement Award. To receive this distinction, a school had to earn a state rating of Accredited and meet or exceed four targets, including a 70 percent pass rate on state assessments in science and mathematics; a 75 percent pass rate on state assessments in English reading and writing; no more than a 10 percent achievement gap in English reading and writing; and no more than a 10 percent achievement gap in mathematics between the lowest-performing group and all other students in the school.
Deer Park and General Stanford are among 52 schools across the Commonwealth to earn the Highest Achievement Award, the most of any school division on the Virginia Peninsula.
Four schools earned the 2019 Board of Education Continuous Improvement Award: Discovery STEM Academy, Dutrow Elementary School, Sanford Elementary School and Denbigh High School. To receive this designation, a school must earn a state accreditation rating of Accredited or Accredited with Conditions and meet at least one of four targets for improved performance on accreditation-related school quality indicators. These schools are among 183 across the state to earn this designation, exceeding other Peninsula school divisions.
The criteria for Virginia Board of Education’s new exemplar performance school recognition program was approved in April 2018. The recognition program is aligned with the Board of Education’s revised accreditation standards and replaces the Virginia Index of Performance recognition program.
