Parks Orthodontics: A father’s legacy lives on

At Parks Orthodontics, running an orthodontic practice is a family tradition. Dr. Bill Parks first opened the practice in a small office in Newport News in 1978. Today, the thriving practice is run by his daughters Allison, director of operations, and Dr. Meredith Parks, orthodontist.

Parks Orthodontics first opened with just three employees, which included Dr. Bill Parks and his wife, Sandy. As the practice grew, so did his family’s role in it. Allison, Meredith and their brother, Will, completed small chores around the office, such as taking out the trash. By the time Meredith completed training as an orthodontic technician, the practice had taken on more team members, expanded to a more spacious Denbigh office and opened two more locations in Williamsburg and Smithfield.

Allison officially joined the team in the early 2000s, while Will helped with the growing IT needs. In 2006, Dr. Meredith completed her orthodontic residency and became the associate orthodontist, working alongside her dad to give patients the beautiful, straight smiles of their dreams.

Though Dr. Bill passed away in May 2015, his memory lives on in the spirit of Parks Orthodontics, which remains grounded in philanthropy, a love of animals and a passion for patient education and care.

An emphasis on new and advanced orthodontic techniques and technology remains a core pillar of the practice and is something that Dr. Bill championed. He recognized the growing importance of digital technology in orthodontics, which helped the practice be an early adopter of innovations such as clear aligners, digital X-rays and a digital intraoral scanner, which replaced the need for goopy impressions with 3D digital scans.

Today, patients are greeted by Mango, the practice’s colorful parrot and mascot. It was Dr. Bill who first made sure the office always had a pet, including hamsters, guinea pigs and the original mascot, a tropical bird named Sunny.

Helping others was a passion of Dr. Bill’s, and he participated in the Kyle Petty Ride Across America Charity Ride multiple times. The ride combined two of his favorite hobbies—riding motorcycles and volunteering for a good cause—and raised funds to send chronically ill children to camp.

Dr. Bill cared deeply about patient education both in and outside the office. Every year, the William R. Parks Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a deserving patient and high school senior in his memory.

Today, Dr. Meredith and her team offer comprehensive orthodontic services including clear aligners, braces, early orthodontic treatment, retention and more. Still and foremost is the practice’s dedication to its patients. In addition to providing high-quality and personalized care, patients have access to a free library and book club, are presented with remote treatment options for paramount convenience and can participate in a rewards hub with prizes.

“We aim to stay true to the vision our dad created while continuing to grow and innovate,” says Allison Parks.

Dr. Meredith adds, “It’s an honor to continue the work our dad dedicated so much of his life to. We look forward to upholding his legacy and taking Parks Orthodontics to new heights.”
