Dr. Hecker & Associates, the first private audiology practice in Virginia, is committed to providing personalized care for every patient. Celebrating its 50th anniversary in March 2024, the practice has consistently delivered individualized services through a patient-centered approach. Using state-of-the-art technology, Dr. Eric Hecker addresses unique hearing and balance needs.
As a local independent and community-oriented practice, Dr. Hecker & Associates was the first in Virginia to perform ENG evaluations for diagnosing balance disorders and to fit digital hearing aids. “This innovation was a significant benefit for many in the community who previously had to travel to Norfolk or Richmond,” says Hecker. He emphasizes that “discussing hearing loss can be sensitive, but modern technology has expanded the range of effective treatments available.”
Hecker earned his master’s degree in audiology from the University of Virginia in 1988 and completed his doctoral degree in 1995. He is certified by the American Speech and Hearing Association and holds a Virginia State Licensure for Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensing.
With advancing technology, there are numerous resources available for the hearing impaired, including captioning for performances, cochlear implants and new digital hearing aids that use artificial intelligence (AI) for enhanced background noise amplification. “Some hearing aids now feature wireless technology, allowing you to connect data to an app for direct interaction via smartphone or tablet,” says Hecker. The treatment process typically begins with a physician’s referral. Hecker conducts a basic diagnostic test to identify the issue and potential medical treatments. “In 80 percent of cases, patients’ hearing loss is permanent, making hearing aids our first line of treatment,” he says.
Obtaining a hearing aid takes about six to eight weeks. Patients start at 60 to 70 percent of the power they need, gradually increasing it over several weeks. This gradual adjustment helps prevent overwhelming patients, many of whom have had limited hearing for years. Patients often need to relearn basic listening skills, as sounds can be distracting after a long period of silence. “This process is similar to physical therapy, as we help clients retrain their ability to listen selectively,” Hecker says.
When asked about what he enjoys most about his work, the audiologist emphasizes the joy of “helping people reconnect with their world — whether it’s hearing wedding vows, a child hearing a mother’s voice for the first time or a grandfather hearing his granddaughter speak. It’s such a rewarding experience,” he says with a smile.
Regarding young patients, Dr. Hecker & Associates offers technology to assess the hearing of newborns. However, caring for younger patients is more intensive, requiring follow-up to ensure proper function and a smooth healing process. “With infants, we assess any hearing loss and its severity, aiming for cochlear implants within the first year of life,” Hecker says. When discussing challenges in his role, he mentions “managing others’ expectations about hearing loss.” Many clients assume hearing aids will restore their hearing to normal, but even normal hearing isn’t “perfect.” “While I can’t cure hearing loss, I can help improve quality of life over time,” he says.
Outside of his practice, Hecker enjoys outdoor activities, including photography, skiing, golfing and hiking. He particularly cherishes his experiences at Mt. Kilimanjaro and The Narrows in Zion National Park. Celebrating 37 years of marriage, he and his wife are proud parents of a son, 30, and a daughter, 29.
