“Allergy is huge,” says Timothy A. Queen, M.D. “Hampton Roads, the entire coastal northeast, is really the epicenter of the United States, perhaps the world.”
As a board-certified otolaryngologist, Queen is hard at work serving the community at Advanced ENT & Allergy in Newport News. Following his education at the University of Virginia for both college and medical school, he crossed the country to complete his residency at the University of Southern California. Upon completion, he returned to Virginia, where he’s been practicing medicine on the Virginia Peninsula for 28 years.
Queen has collaborated and shifted through the changing of practices many times. After working with another practice, his first practice — Virginia Ear, Nose and Throat & Allergy, — merged with local practices and developed into a bigger group for 16 working years. “In 2016, the large group splintered into smaller practices again,” he says. “We’re all independent entities again, and that’s when Advanced ENT & Allergy was actually formed.
“I was one of the original founders of the old group. Since then, the group has all [been] practicing independently, but sharing calls,” he says. Because he owned the building shared by the doctors, Queen remained in the same spot.
Advanced ENT & Allergy is staffed with more than 20 members, which Queen recognizes is “a lot for a single physician practice, but we’re a multiple specialty practice.” Erica L. Cherry, FNP-BC, is a board-certified family nurse practitioner, who has been with Advanced ENT & Allergy since September. “This is my first position as a nurse practitioner,” she says. She sees her own patients as well as those of Queen’s on occasion, “so that the wait isn’t very long.”
Cherry says with a smile, “I didn’t think I would love working with children, but I find it a joy. They’re so quirky, you never know what they’re going to do [or say]. They can be challenging at time, but I’m always able to meet the challenge with the help of their parents, caregivers and always the medical assistants who are in the room with us. We’re very proud of the work we do here.”
“Allergy isn’t just a runny nose or sneezing or post-nasal drip,” Queen explains. Most ear, nose and throat problems are manifestations, chronic tonsillitis, sinusitis, chronic ear infections. Most actually have a root in allergy. You have colds but allergies are chronic.” He says allergies often detract from people’s productivity, causing them to miss school and work.
The practice comprises both an ENT allergy practice and a surgical ENT component, according to Queen. “My number one surgery is the septoplasty,” he says, performed to correct a deviated septum. All surgeries performed at the office nowadays — such as sinus, tonsil and ear surgeries — are outpatient procedures.”
“[For the] most part, our patients are relatively healthy — they just have quality of life issues, and to be able to improve quality of life, to be able to get them out there and enjoy Hampton Roads again is the most rewarding thing — and having them refer their friends, family members and colleagues to us,” Queen says.
Queen and his wife Kate have three children, all of whom are college graduates. In his spare time, he is a bourbon connoisseur. In fact, he shared that he became a certified Executive Bourbon Steward via the Stave and Thief Society in Kentucky.
“I’m grateful to all the patients I’ve taken care of in the past, and all the ones who hopefully will come to see me in the future,” Queen says.
