Since opening its doors in August 2016, the Newport News office of ATCS, a multidisciplinary engineering consulting firm, has become a cornerstone of development in the Hampton Roads area and a leading force in community partnership.
Specializing in a broad range of engineering, design, construction and contracting services, its seasoned team — many of whom have worked together for more than 15 years — forges strong partnerships with a network of local developers, firms and key clients including the City of Newport News and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to spearhead regional growth and infrastructure enhancement.
A notable example of this dynamic collaboration is the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) project. This major initiative aims to enhance travel efficiency and safety in the region. When completed, the transportation network will consist of 45 miles of express lanes in each direction on Interstate 64 from Newport News to the Bowers Hill interchange in Chesapeake. ATCS serves as the owner’s representative on the project’s Segment 4C in Hampton, providing construction engineering, management and inspection services.
Additionally, the firm is supporting the City of Newport News’ efforts to update its ADA infrastructure through the development of an ADA Transition Plan, helping to ensure the city remains accessible for all residents.
Beyond infrastructure, ATCS’s partnerships with regional public and private sector clients address a spectrum of needs from safety and mobility to economic development, resilience, engagement, land development and environmental sustainability.
Recently, ATCS assisted the City of Newport News in securing a $1M Neighborhood Access and Equity Planning Grant to reconnect the Southeast and Downtown areas. This effort further demonstrates the firm’s role in enhancing community connectivity.
ATCS’s extensive engagement throughout municipal departments underscores its commitment to fostering a thriving, resilient community. Complementing its technical capabilities, the Newport News team demonstrated its commitment to future generations during this year’s National Engineers Week in February. The team joined with local engineering firms and societies to host more than 400 middle and high school students for a special screening of the ‘Dream Big’ IMAX film in Hampton. This film seeks to ignite students’ passion for engineering, showing them the transformative power of the field through interactive exhibits and hands-on activities, reinforcing ATCS’s dedication to educational outreach and community engagement.
