Charles Yost Custom Cabinets has been manufacturing high-end architectural commercial plastic laminate casework and fixtures for medical office buildings, hospitals and a variety of other commercial business offices in the Hampton Roads area for 37 years.

“Almost 40 years ago, while my wife was working as a nurse, I developed a relationship with the hospital personnel who requested a cabinet. After working on this project, I recognized the critical need for quick repair turnaround of casework in the medical settings. I sought to support the medical community by offering quick and efficient solutions for damaged casework, as timely repairs are essential to ensure uninterrupted operations and patient safety,” says Charles (Chick) Yost, president and owner. “Since then the business has evolved, and we are able to fabricate solid surface tops as well.”

Born and raised in Hampton Roads, Yost takes pride in his deep ties to the community and has a thorough understanding of the area’s needs. Prior to his time working with cabinets, Yost began his career at General Electric, where he spent two decades in manufacturing.

Charles Yost Custom Cabinets is greater than just Yost — it’s a family business. “My son and grandson both work here, continuing a legacy of dedication and hard work. I have worked with my son in this business for more than 30 years, and it is a pleasure to watch him handle the daily operations and watch his son learn the business,” Yost says. “The involvement of my son and grandson ensures that our family values and commitment to excellence are preserved for future generations.”

The business team works in both the commercial and medical industries. Yost highlights that every job, regardless of its size, holds significance in achieving the company’s overarching goals. “Whether it is a large-scale project impacting numerous lives or a smaller task requiring meticulous attention to detail, we approach each with the same level of dedication and professionalism,” he says.

According to Yost, the use of plastic laminate in high-end architectural commercial casework and fixtures offers numerous benefits, including:

  • Durability: High-pressure laminates are resistant to scratches, impacts and wear.
  • Hygiene: The smooth, non-porous surfaces are easy to clean and disinfect, crucial for medical and laboratory environments.
  • Customization: The wide variety of available colors, patterns and textures allows for personalized designs to match specific aesthetic requirements.
  • Cost-effectiveness: Plastic laminate casework is often more affordable than other high-end materials while still providing an attractive and durable finish.
  • Sustainability: Many laminates are manufactured using environmentally friendly processes and materials, contributing to sustainable building practices.

When asked about his favorite part of the job, Yost reflects inward on his group of hard-working employees. “One of the most gratifying aspects of this work is seeing an employee recognized for hard work and dedication. When someone is told he or she is doing a good job and his or her efforts are greatly appreciated, it not only boosts the employee’s morale but also fosters a positive and productive work environment,” Yost says. “Our team recognizes that small jobs are the building blocks of larger successes, and we take pride in delivering consistent quality across all endeavors.”

When it comes to the area Yost calls home, he makes sure to give back. He says he is proud to have been an active member of the Warwick Rotary for 30 years. “My participation in this esteemed organization has allowed me to connect with like-minded individuals who are dedicated to making a positive impact in our community,” he says. The business has also supports local charitable events in the area, including the CHKD Golf Tournament and the “Here for the Girls” Breast Cancer Golf Tournament.

When Yost isn’t busy working or serving his community, he enjoys participating in the Hampton Roads Corvette Club or exploring new places with the same group of friends with whom he has traveled for the past 21 years.
