Tucked into a quiet office suite in Oyster Point, City Center Crown & Bridge Lab operates largely out of sight, but its impact is anything but invisible.
Inside, dental laboratory owner Stephen McGrew and his team focus on a craft most people rarely think about — creating crowns, bridges and implants to restore not just smiles, but also confidence. “In layman’s terms, we make teeth,” McGrew says. But the reality is far more intricate, blending technical precision with a level of customization that requires both experience and attention to detail.
From selecting the right material to refining the fit, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. “Different materials work better in different situations,” McGrew says. “We consult with dentists on everything — from size to brand to how something is going to function long-term.” That process becomes even more difficult when aesthetics come into play, particularly when matching a single tooth to surrounding natural enamel.
“It doesn’t take much to be off,” he says. “If it’s a front tooth, that’s something people notice right away.” Combating the challenge, the lab offers custom shading, allowing patients to preview what their restoration will look like before it is finalized. The goal is not just functionality, but confidence — ensuring each piece blends as seamlessly as possible. It is a level of precision many outside the field may never fully recognize, but one that defines the work being done behind the scenes.
McGrew’s path into the industry was not a traditional one, shaped largely by his wife’s experience working in dental lab services while serving in the Air Force. “I didn’t know a crown from my toe,” he says with a smile. “She was doing all the work at the lab she was in, and I realized this was something we could do for ourselves.” What started as a leap into the unknown turned into a long-term career built through hands-on learning and persistence. “After 25 years, you learn to work with a lot of different things,” he adds.
As the industry evolved, so did the lab. “When we started, everything was done by hand,” McGrew says. “Now everything is digital.” That shift required a significant investment, but one he saw as necessary. “If you don’t go with the newest technology, you’re not getting quality,” he says. “When we started, there were seven labs on the Virginia Peninsula — now there are only two.” Even with those changes, the approach remains personal, combining digital precision with hands-on finishing and close collaboration.
That flexibility also allows the lab to respond when timing matters most. “We had a patient who broke a tooth the day before her wedding,” McGrew says. “We made the crown in 24 hours, and that’s normally a two-week process.” It’s a level of service that extends into everyday situations as well. “Sometimes people have partial dentures that need to be fixed, and they can’t go without them,” he says. “So we’ll take them Friday and have them ready Monday. We’ll work the weekend if we have to.”
For McGrew, the work goes beyond mechanics. “People don’t realize how much your teeth affect your appearance,” he says. “Someone can see missing teeth and immediately make assumptions, and that’s not fair.” That perspective shapes how he approaches each case, especially when working directly with patients. “When someone comes in nervous and you can change their appearance and help their confidence, that’s the most rewarding part,” he says.
Outside of the lab, life is just as busy. “I have five grandkids, so we do a lot of camping and riding dirt bikes,” McGrew says. “We have people over all the time for barbecues, and there’s always something going on.” When he’s not with family, he’s often working with his hands. “I’m always fixing or building something,” he says. “If something breaks, I’m going to take care of it.”
Looking ahead, McGrew’s focus remains simple. “We’re going to do whatever it takes to make people happy,” he says. “That’s always been our goal.”
