Clancy & Theys Construction: Ready to take on any project

Clancy & Theys is a Southeast general contractor and construction management company that specializes in building long-lasting, quality buildings and relationships with clients, colleagues and communities. Bill Goggins, vice president of the Virginia Division of the company, focuses on the holistic success of everyone involved in the construction projects. “It’s my job to support our project teams to ensure they have everything needed to be successful, and that means success for the clients as well as the teams themselves in their professional and personal pursuits,” Goggins says.

The construction company was founded in Raleigh, North Carolina, in 1949 by brothers-in-law E.I. Clancy and John Theys. Its services include general contracting, design-building, preconstruction and Virtual Design and Construction (VDC), with a focus on commercial and industrial construction, ranging from historic renovations to multi-million square-foot distribution facilities. In addition to its offices in Raleigh, Clancy & Theys has other offices in Orlando, Florida; Wilmington, North Carolina; and Charlotte, North Carolina.

Clancy & Theys began working in Virginia in 1989, and five years later in 1994, Goggins joined the team. In his 27 years with the company, he has seen outstanding growth of which he is extremely proud. “In 1989, we started with three employees, occupying one very small office, he says. “Today, we have 85 employees here in Virginia and 320 across the entire company. Our City Center office space has grown to upwards of 15,000 square feet and we are proud to have worked in 19 states.”

Clancy & Theys works on a variety of buildings with different companies in Newport News, ranging from Dollar Tree and Regent University to local arts centers, academic buildings, churches, hotels and senior living developments. Despite the range of work, the team has some projects which stand out and they are most proud of. “One of our favorite projects here in Newport News is the Canon ACM facility, right around the corner from our office. In 2008, using the design-build, or team-build delivery method, we constructed a new 709,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art cartridge manufacturing facility to house manufacturing equipment for laser printer cartridges. This project was utterly massive in size and scope, and it was completed on a fast-track in just 310 days,” Goggins says with pride.

The dedication Clancy & Theys has for its clients has earned the team state and national recognition. “As a company, we are consistently recognized by Engineering News Record as one of the top 200 contractors in the nation, top 100 Construction Manager-at-Risk Contractors, and top 100 Green Builders in the nation,” Goggins says. “Our individual divisions and some of our employees have received numerous local awards in the areas where we work in recognition of our commitment to safety, stewardship, passion and collaboration. And I was honored to be recognized last year on Virginia Business’ inaugural Virginia 500 Power List in the real estate category (recognizing architecture, engineering, construction and development).”

Growing up, Goggins always had an interest in construction and a love for working on projects around the house with his father. This interest led to summer jobs, internships and college programs where he “learned the ropes,” he says. “I was exposed to so many different facets of the construction industry and eventually decided to make it a career. In my opinion, exposure to the field from a young age is a key to success in this industry. That’s why Clancy & Theys makes a concerted effort to attend career days and job fairs in our communities and to provide ample and meaningful internship opportunities for the next generation of industry professionals,” Goggins says.

And when it comes to Goggins’ preferred part of his job, he responds enthusiastically, “Without a doubt, my favorite part of my work is building meaningful relationships with my colleagues, construction partners, clients and community. Being surrounded by and working with such a diversely talented group of people and being part of an incredibly dynamic team that delivers tangible, quality projects has been the highlight of my career.”

When Goggins has days off from Clancy & Theys, he loves to spend time with his family. “My wife Margaret and I raised our five kids in Hilton Village, and we are all active in our community. Our youngest just graduated from college, our eldest daughter just got married, and our eldest son and his wife welcomed our granddaughter Violet in October 2019. Together with the family dogs, they all keep us very busy, and happily so,” Goggins says.
