And how much would we admire a man if all these qualities were present, some inherent or innate — intelligence and humility, and some learned, taught or demonstrated — altruism? Conway H. Sheild III manifests each of these attributes and many more.
Born in 1942 in Newport News, Sheild attended Hilton Elementary and Warwick High schools and Virginia Episcopal School, a Lynchburg preparatory school. He earned his B.A. and J.D. at Washington & Lee University. After law school, Sheild served in the military as a first lieutenant at Ft. Gordon, Georgia, and then in Vietnam before being honorably discharged as a captain. Keenly traditional, Sheild followed in the footsteps of his father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather when he decided to pursue the law.

Sheild embodies intelligence.
Sheild has been an attorney for more than 50 years. His expertise lies in the fields of real estate law, commercial transactions, business and banking law and commercial law. Currently an of counsel with the law firm of Kaufman & Canoles, Sheild provides expertise, mentoring and consultation in the real estate strategies group and commercial section. And for many years Sheild was with the law firm Jones, Blechman, Woltz & Kelly, P.C.
Sheild has served on committees with the Virginia Bar Association and Virginia State Bar. Additionally, he previously served as president of the Newport News Bar Association. While expertly managing these tasks, Sheild spent immeasurable hours donating his time, talents and finances to dozens of charitable organizations.
Sheild embodies altruism.
Sheild is a dedicated supporter and champion of charitable giving. As a member of the de Tocqueville Society, a prestigious group of United Way donors, he is a standout leader and a trailblazer to emulate. Sheild has chaired the board of the Virginia Peninsula United Way, and in 1986 and 2000 he chaired its campaigns. Along with his time, he has donated thousands of dollars to promote the education and health of Peninsula residents.
Among his other numerous charitable ventures, Sheild donated a space for the Boys & Girls Club on the Peninsula. He has also served on the boards of Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, the YMCA Peninsula, the Peninsula Arts Association, Peninsula Family Services and CNU’s Luter School of Business board during its accreditation. He continues to serve the Virginia Peninsula United Way on and off since 1986.
Sheild embodies humility.
According to Charvaˉlla West, Virginia Peninsula United Way CEO, Sheild “is a living example of who the United Way wants to be.” He is humble in the extreme and asks nothing in return for his time, talent, mentorship and financial donations. He helped build today’s United Way over the years while serving in several different capacities and continues to offer his vast experience in the community, his connections to other leaders. West further points out that he seeks no recognition or awards. He simply wants to serve.
While all this may seem like a jam-packed life for a much younger man, Sheild also rides his bike on weekends and scuba dives in the Caymans.
Sheild lives life to the fullest as he humbly serves others.
