Step aboard the Eastern & Oriental Express (E&O) luxury train where grand history, inspiring opulence and a sense of adventure are intertwined as you ride through Southeast Asia, exploring Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.
Enter a world of classic glamour as you travel among ancient wonders and cosmopolitan cities. Handsome green and gold carriages conceal magnificent cherrywood paneling, Thai silks and Malaysian embroidery, combining adventure with total relaxation.
The E&O has eight luxurious sleeping cars where you will enjoy breakfast served in your room or taken in the observation car. Afternoon tea with cakes is served in your room.
Two dining cars are hooked to the train for every journey. The restaurant cars have two sittings for lunch
(12 noon or 2 p.m.) and two sittings for dinner (6 p.m. or 9 p.m.). Passengers may choose which restaurant car and sitting suits them best.
Tea, coffee and water are included in the price, with alcoholic drinks an additional charge. All prices aboard the train are in U.S. dollars. If you pay in other major currencies, your change will be given in U.S. dollars.
A piano bar is available and guests can get a drink from early morning to late at night. Entertainment, such as traditional Thai and Malaysian dancing, is provided nightly, and when dancing ends, the pianist continues to entertain. The bar car is the train’s social hub, with most passengers mingling with fellow train passengers after dinner.
One car has a small library with comfortable seating, including tables where passengers travelling in groups can spend private time together.
The Observation Car is an open-sided car for passengers to enjoy unobstructed views of the scenery and experience the sounds and smells of the often jungle-like environments through which the train passes.
Enjoy a four-day, three-night train journey traveling through Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Leaving Singapore, an island country, you will travel through Langkawi and Penang, Malaysia, with a perfect blend of relaxation on board and inspiring exploration off the train, always with an atmosphere of celebration.
Your train journey continues through Malaysia, where you will delight in the vistas as you pass the rice paddies and timeless rural villages of western Malaysia. Visit Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital city, where you will take a boat trip to Langkawi, renowned for its vibrant underwater life, from parrot fish and angel fish to moray eels and grouper.
On to Kuala Kangsar in Malaysia to tour the grand Mosque, Royal Museum and Sultan Shah Gallery.
In Thailand, you will visit the town of Kanchanaburi known for the Death Railway, built in WWII. The line crosses the River Khwae Yai via the Death Railway Bridge. The World War II Museum and Art Gallery is a must-see, as well as the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre to explore the wider history of the railway, and JEATH War Museum honors the prisoners of war who died building the bridge.
Your last stop is Bangkok, where you disembark for your journey home or choose to spend additional time. Bangkok is intense with crowds swarming temples. Street food sizzles into the early hours. And the nightlife — from the Patpong entertainment district to ritzy rooftop bars — is nonstop. Marvel at Wat Pho’s enormous gold Buddha and Wat Arun’s epic view, or spend a Saturday souvenir-hunting at Chatuchak Weekend Market. It is a bustling city, so if you need to recharge, book a traditional Thai massage or relax in Lumpini Park, one of the city’s only green spaces.
The Eastern & Oriental Express has been narrating adventures since its inaugural journey from Bangkok to Singapore in 1993. The sister of the celebrated Venice Simplon-Orient Express takes you on a grand journey in Southeast Asia to capture the heart of Malaysia.
