With the cost of living on the rise and energy bills reaching new highs, everyone is looking for ways to save money without sacrificing their way of life. One of the smartest and most underutilized ways of doing so is by taking advantage of the 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Tax Credit.
This federal tax credit helps homeowners offset the cost of upgrading their HVAC system(s), insulation, windows, doors and other home improvements that can help improve the energy efficiency of their home. Many people do not know it exists or don’t realize how much it can help them. Let’s change that.
What is the 25C Tax Credit?
Officially known as the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit, this credit was expanded under the inflation reduction act of 2022 to give Americans a stronger incentive to improve their homes and reduce their carbon footprint. As of January 1, 2023, the credit is now up to 30 percent of the cost of qualified energy-efficient home improvements, up to $3,200 for the tax year.
This is not a rebate or deduction — it’s a dollar-for-dollar reduction on the taxes that you owe. That means if you qualify for the full credit, it could reduce your tax bill $3,200.
What qualifies?
A wide range of upgrades qualify under the 25C credit. Here are some highlights:
- HVAC systems: Heat pumps, central air conditioners, furnaces and boilers that meet the high efficiency standards.
- Water heaters: Heat pump water heaters and high-efficiency gas heaters.
- Windows and doors: Energy star-certified replacements can earn credits of up to $600 per year.
- Insulation and air sealing: Includes materials that reduce heat lost, such as spray foam, fiberglass batt insulation and weather stripping.
- Home energy audits: A professional home energy audit can qualify for an additional $150.
Note that the maximum annual credit is divided into two categories: $1,200 for most improvements and up to $2,000 for qualified heat pump systems and heat pump water heaters. If you’re replacing an HVAC system with a high-efficiency heat pump, you may be able to claim the full $2,000 just for that.
Why this matters now
There has never been a better time to invest in your home.
- You’re already potentially paying for inefficiency. Older HVAC systems and poor duct design and insulation are costing you more every month in energy costs. Upgrading now not only saves you money long-term, but the tax credit also helps offset the upfront cost.
- Available now, not later. While some other federal programs, like rebate-based incentives, are still in rollout phases or vary by state, the 25C credit is active and available today.
- High-efficiency becomes more affordable. A lot of homeowners shy away from higher end systems because of the price tag. With this tax credit, you can invest in a top tier, energy-saving system and get a good chunk back at tax time.
What homeowners should do
If you’re considering a home upgrade, here are a couple tips:
- Talk to a certified contractor. Work with licensed HVAC professionals and contractors who are familiar with the 25C requirements. Not all products qualify, so be sure your contractor helps you select the right equipment and material to meet the necessary efficiency ratings.
- Keep your receipts and documentation. You’ll need manufacturer certification statements and itemized invoices to claim the credit on your tax return.
A win-win for homeowners and the climate
Beyond the financial benefits, there’s a bigger picture. Every energy-efficient upgrade helps reduce the strain on our power grid and cuts carbon emissions. When enough homeowners take action, it can add up to a real impact.
This incentive does not last forever. While the inflation reduction act of 2022 had these credits slated to last until 2032, the “Big Beautiful Bill” has cut short the duration of these credits. This means that to be eligible for the 25C tax credit, qualifying home improvements must be completed and placed into service by December 31, 2025.
In conclusion
The 25C Energy Efficient Home improvement Credit is a powerful tool every homeowner should consider. Whether you’re replacing an old AC unit, upgrading your insulation or finally investing in energy-efficient windows, this credit helps lighten the financial burden.
