In Williamsburg, there is a growing community for flute enthusiasts. Named for its fun and energetic nature, Flute Frenzy provides a place for people to develop their flute prowess. Professional or amateur, anyone is welcome to join. The organization has four ensembles for various ages. The Overture flute class is for children in fifth and sixth grades. This group provides introductory instruction for those who can read and play five flute notes. There are also ensembles for middle schoolers, high schoolers and adults. Everyone with an interest in practicing or learning the flute can find a place within Flute Frenzy.
The flutists perform several times throughout the year. While Flute Frenzy schedules many of these performances, members of the community can reach out and request concerts from the Fantasia Flutes ensemble. Typically, every member performs, though there are opportunities for smaller group performances as well. Smaller groups often perform during gigs, ranging from three to six flutists.
The organization intends to keep engaging with the community and expanding its outreach. Currently, there are 17 members within the Fantasia Flutes ensemble. Many members discovered this group through word of mouth, though Flute Frenzy’s online presence is becoming another avenue for discovery. Members are typically adults and nonprofessional flutists. Above all, the ensemble is comprised of curious, passionate people.
Going forward, Flute Frenzy is hoping to include more young flutists as well. Music education is often inaccessible for many, so this organization is working to bridge that gap. Thanks to several donors, scholarships are available for upcoming semesters. Moreover, the organization can provide flutes for players, with the exception of C flutes. Everyone can attend the first rehearsal for no charge to experience a typical day of Flute Frenzy.
More than a year ago, Sean Awajo became the artistic director. He took this position after Margaret Carlson, who founded this organization 23 years ago. He intends to continue with Flute Frenzy’s original mission while reaching more people. Additionally, he is conductor of Fantasia and Overture. In his free time, he composes new music and enjoys playing board games with his wife. An early passion of his, Awajo considers the flute to be one of the best instruments. The flute contains many possibilities and techniques in performances, opening a wide world of sounds. For instance, Awajo once experimentally used the flute to beatbox during a performance.
Flute Frenzy’s next performance is on March 8. This game night themed excursion will be interactive and free. For anyone interested in following Flute Frenzy’s performances, there will be continued updates for organization events and opportunities on its website and social media channels. There are also livestreams hosted on Flute Frenzy’s Facebook page and video performances on its YouTube account. In the words of Teresa Denner, a member of Flute Frenzy since 2013, “come and listen. There is a place for anyone in the community to experience the art of music.”
