Joshua Goff and Christopher Voltin formed Goff Voltin, PLLC in October of 2015 in Newport News, and have been working hard to champion legal services ever since. “We are a small firm of three attorneys who focus exclusively on litigation. Goff and Voltin focus primarily on criminal defense, while our third attorney, John Dooley, handles family law and traffic matters. We also have one paralegal, Lara Munoz, who keeps the office running smoothly,” Goff says.

Goff Voltin can handle most criminal law cases, from traffic violations to first-degree murder charges. The firm also focuses on family law, which involves custody, child support and divorce. “Criminal and family law are emotionally fraught for all concerned. We feel that we have an obligation to play the part we are assigned in the criminal justice system to ensure our clients are heard and are treated fairly. Our goal with every case is to work with the client to achieve the best possible outcome under the circumstances,” Goff says about their responsibilities as attorneys.

The Goff Voltin group prides itself on using teamwork. They consistently consult with each other about questions, legal research and current ever-changing laws. The firm’s varying personalities come together to create a unique and successful dynamic. Voltin and Goff complement each other well because they are close friends, yet have different personalities. Voltin is more extroverted and enjoys wrestling legal issues through brainstorming and debate, while Goff is more introverted and enjoys solving legal problems with the investigative research aspect of the law.

Goff and Voltin pride themselves on their ability to work together to understand how the law affects clients’ cases. “Most of our day is spent with clients, either in court, visiting those in custody or meeting with clients in our office to prepare for trial,” Goff says. “A typical workday for us almost always involves going to court for part of the day.”

Both Voltin and Goff agree that the most fulfilling part of their job is their passion to help people. “The most rewarding part of my job is when I can apply the knowledge I’ve learned about the law to achieve an outcome for a client that would not have happened otherwise,“ Goff says. “Some of the most rewarding wins are those that turn on a quirk or loophole in the law that others may miss.”

Voltin agrees. “The most satisfying part is the ability to significantly improve my clients’ lives. People facing criminal charges are usually going through their darkest days and are in need of help. I enjoy confronting these situations and working to help my clients get back on their feet,” he says.

While the attorneys are often busy helping their clients, they still find time for themselves. “I enjoy traveling whenever I can, both near and far,” Goff says. “I also enjoy reading and taking two long walks a day with my dog, Alfred.”

“I love spending time with my wife and two daughters,” Voltin says. “Our girls are still in preschool, so my wife and I spend most of our free time chasing them around at the beach or lake.”

The Goff Voltin team wants the community to know that they are here for them. “We are proud of the business we have built here in Oyster Point and take our roles in the community seriously. If anyone is having to tackle a criminal or family law matter in the court system, we are happy to speak with you to see if we can be of help,” the attorneys say.

Goff Voltin is dedicated to securing the best possible outcomes for its clients, while making a positive impact in the community.
