A latecomer to the law profession, Wayne Holcomb, president, managing partner and owner of Holcomb Law, PC, had a 20-year career in the
U.S. Navy. Stationed in Norfolk, Holcomb flew planes off of aircraft carriers. While in the Navy, he obtained his MBA from Old Dominion University. He graduated from Law School at Regent University in Virginia Beach. “I consider law to be more of a calling than a profession,” he says.
After two years with a Virginia Beach firm, Holcomb decided that he wanted his own firm, run according to his own principles. “I avoid a heavy case load because I want to give each client ample time for questions and full service. I want to explain options and rights and answer all questions. I want our clients to have confidence in us,” he says. The firm specializes in family law and criminal defense.
There are eight lawyers in the firm including Holcomb’s wife, Colleen. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wellesley College and a law degree from Regent University. Prior to joining her husband’s firm, she worked for nonprofit agencies including Flying Hospital International, the Christian Broadcasting Network and the Christian Legal Society. She is executive director of the Republican National Coalition for Life.
Wayne meets with prospective clients to answer questions and determine whether he can serve their needs. “These meetings are not a ‘sales pitch,’” he says. He provides a lot of free advice. There is ample information on his web site. “I do not believe in charging for all legal information,” he says. He has an online book entitled Do Not Hire a Family Law Attorney Until You Have Read This Book. Then the prospective client is invited to call with questions.
“All lawyers are not the same,” Wayne says. He carefully chooses the ones he invites to join his firm. He expects them to adhere to his business philosophy.
The firm promises to return calls the same business day and to keep clients informed. The firm has received many accolades, including “10 out of 10 ‘Superb’ ratings by the Independent Lawyer Review, Top 10 in Virginia in client satisfaction AIFLA, “Super Lawyers” recognition — 2016 to present, Certified Mediator Status by Mediate.com, Daily Press “Client Choice Award” winner 2015 to present, Coastal Virginia magazine “Top Lawyers” 2017 to present and Better Business Bureau A+ rating.
In addition to City Center, there are additional offices in Hampton, Poquoson and Virginia Beach.
Wayne is a strong proponent of mediation as a tool to resolve legal issues. He is a State Certified Mediator. He believes it is an “efficient” way to resolve problems and legal issues. “It is a way to ‘fight’ amicably, reach a satisfactory resolution and have everyone end up satisfied,” he says. He is an adjunct professor at Regent University Law School, where he teaches mediation.
In addition to managing his firm, Wayne is active in church and civic affairs in Poquoson, where he lives with his family (three children). He has been chair of the Republican Party since 2015. He has served on the Poquoson School Board as well as the boards of Care Net, a ProLife organization, and the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for children. Any free time is spent reading or at the YMCA.
What about traveling? “The Navy gave me plenty of that,” he says. “My wife loves cruising, though,” he adds.
Wayne is from a small town in Kansas. His family farmed. “There was no indoor plumbing or A/C,” he says. “I didn’t care that I was poor.” He grew up in church and was the first person in his family to graduate from college. He attended Oral Roberts University, where he led missionary teams.
Wayne’s business card includes the words “You Matter.” “I am not trying to change the world, just one life at a time,” he says. “My firm provides empathy, encouragement and the answers needed for my clients to get through temporary troubles.”
