Most individuals today are familiar with driving down the road and seeing men and women, hard at work, marking the sides of the street with bright paint or digging deep into the ground, preparing the site for construction. A crucial component to successful construction is land surveying. Michael Surveying and Mapping, P.C. completes all the necessary tasks of quality surveying while focusing on professionalism, performance and integrity.

Located in Newport News since 2001, Michael Surveying has established roots in the community that have been strengthened by experience and a sincere dedication to providing quality services to clients. This business developed community connections by providing clients with precise work through dedication and loyalty under Paul Michael, Jr., company president. Michael knew he wanted to develop his own business as soon as he stepped foot into the surveying industry. In 2001, a year after he obtained his surveying license, Michael planted the seeds of Michael Surveying & Mapping, P.C. and the local Newport News business has been growing ever since.

“The best part about owning your own business is the freedom of being your own boss,” Michael says. That freedom to create a successful business and cultivate it from the ground up has allowed him to not only cater to each client’s needs but to also implement services that other land surveying firms do not have the ability to sample.

Since 2012, Michael Surveying & Mapping, P.C. has been providing Underground Utility Designation (UUD) to its engineering, commercial, municipal and residential clients. When the company began offering this service, it was the first land only surveying firm in the region to provide the four quality levels of UUD.

As for operational tasks, Michael himself has done it all. From spending time out in the field surveying to tackling administration work, Michael understands and has done practically every job that allows his business to run like a well-oiled machine. As the business continues to grow and develop, Michael finds he spends more time delegating and accomplishing important administrative tasks, leaving his employees, with their combined 60 years of experience, to head out into the field.

Having more time in the office offers Michael the chance to bring his hobbies and passions outside of work, inside. The walls of Michael’s office are decorated with the trophies of hunting game in the area, large prize fish that were reeled in down in the Outer Banks and photos of the pristine boat Michael keeps in North Carolina.

While reflecting on the success of his business, Michael attributes the prosperity to one group—his clients. “We appreciate the support of our loyal clients,” Michael says. After the hard economic recession in 2008 not every local business was able to keep its head above water.

High technology methods such as 3-D laser scanning and drones to accomplish jobs allow Michael Surveying & Mapping, P.C. to provide clients with accurate and quality surveying.

According to the company’s website, the focus on commitment to the job allows the company to maintain “large company capabilities but small business flexibility.”

Says Michael, “Knowing that your quality of work encourages clients to return strengthens my confidence in the business for years to come.”
