NN School Board adopts new strategic plan Elevate 2030
Newport News School Board approved a new five-year strategic plan for Newport News Public Schools (NNPS).
Elevate 2030: Empowering Every Learner is designed to outline the priorities of the board and school division leadership to guide their work through 2030. The plan contains new mission, vision and core values statements, as well as goals in the focus categories of academic literacy, culture of advancement, workforce readiness, civic and business partnerships and elevating its identity.
Elevate 2030 was formulated through the six-month work of a steering committee comprised of a cross-section of the community. The committee included students, parents, teachers, school division officials, city officials, business and civic leaders and community members.
Newport News School Board student rep selected for U.S. Senate Youth Program
Kyla Leggette, a senior at Menchville High School and the student representative to the Newport News School Board, was selected to participate in the United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP), according to the USSYP.
Leggette was one of two students from Virginia chosen by the Virginia Department of Education to join Senator Tim Kaine and Senator Mark Warner in representing Virginia during the 64th annual USSYP Washington Week, which will be held March 7–14 in Washington, D.C.
Students will experience an intensive week-long study of the federal government and the people who lead it, meeting with senators, the president, a Supreme Court justice and other high-level officials and will receive a $10,000 undergraduate college scholarship.
NNPS students share innovation at VSTE conference
NNPS students were selected to showcase innovative programming at the Virginia Society for Technology in Education (VSTE) Annual Conference in December at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. Students from Newport News, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach were invited to participate in the conference’s student-led activities.
VSTE is an organization for educators passionate about transforming learning with technology, according to its website.
NNPS students and teachers participated in VSTE Kid Talks, an annual statewide showcase focused on student innovation, technology, leadership and learning. Students participated in a panel discussion followed by poster sessions and a demonstration in the Exhibition Hall.
