2026 NNPS Senior Rally gives students a chance to celebrate finishing strong
Seniors making the stretch run to graduation in June took time to focus, hear words of wisdom and have a lot of fun as Newport News Public Schools held its Senior Rally for the Class of 2026 on March 4 at Christopher Newport University’s Freeman Center.
A total of 1,550 seniors from all of the city’s high schools joined together for a show of school spirit and senior pride. They were decked out in school colors on everything from face paint to tutus and headwear of all varieties.
Students visited with representatives from 40 vendors representing post-secondary opportunities, including universities, businesses, organizations and military branches. They heard motivational words from numerous leaders and alumni and participated in games as part of a spirit contest.
Soundscapes honors NNPS with Community Partner Award
Soundscapes honored Newport News Public Schools and the City of Newport News with its Community Partner Awards on February 21 at the 2026 Soundscapes Gala at the Marriott at City Center.
Superintendent Dr. Michele Mitchell, School Board Chairman Dr. Terri Best, Board Vice Chairman Maritsa Alger and Board Member Lisa Surles-Law accepted the award.
“On behalf of the Newport News Public Schools family composed of many dedicated members who participate in and champion our partnership with Soundscapes, we accept this Community Partner Award with deep gratitude,” Mitchell said. “We are proud to stand alongside the City of Newport News in support of an organization that enriches the lives of our students and our families through the power of the arts.”
NNPS to conduct efficiency study
Newport News Public Schools plans to partner with an outside consulting company during the next several months to conduct an efficiency study of the entire school division.
The intent of the study is to assess the enrollment, building capacity, staffing, attendance zones, transportation services, instructional programing, support services and locations in Newport News Public Schools, according to the school board and Superintendent Dr. Michele Mitchell.
Newport News Public Schools will use the results of the study to make data-driven decisions to enhance operational efficiency along with instructional and programmatic priorities.
