Employees show off their NNPS pride at Convocation
Part reunion after summer break and part pep rally electrified the Hampton Roads Convention Center as Newport News Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Michele Mitchell welcomed employees for the 2024-2025 school year. All approximately 4,800 NNPS employees gathered on August 16 to celebrate their school division pride together as they prepared to welcome students back to school on August 26.
Mitchell spoke about her own pride in leading the school division and acknowledged the importance of each individual who works daily to serve students. A video featured students talking about staff members who have had the most impact on their lives.
Teachers and support staff members arrived at Convocation on school buses from their work sites to a rousing welcome by cheerleaders from the city’s five high schools. Groups showed off their spirit decked out in an array of school colors, costumes and accessories as pom poms and thunder sticks waved in the crowd.
NNPS teacher receives ODU’s clinical faculty award
LeRonica Moses, a special education teacher at Knollwood Meadows Elementary School, received Old Dominion University’s Elementary Clinical Faculty Member of the Year Award for 2023-2024.
ODU’s Office of Clinical Experiences and Department of Teaching & Learning have partnered to create the Clinical Faculty of the Year award to recognize the excellent work of the teachers in schools mentoring and coaching ODU teacher candidates.
Specifically, this award recognizes teachers in grades P-12 who worked with an ODU teacher candidate during a student teaching experience in the past academic year. University supervisors who oversee student teachers, ODU faculty members and the student teachers themselves were asked to nominate clinical faculty for the award during the fall and spring semesters.
NNPS Community Relations earns 11 national awards for communications
The Newport News Public Schools Community Relations team received 11 awards when the 2024 National School Public Relations Association school communication awards were announced.
The team was recognized 11 times in the Publications and Digital Media Excellence Awards category, including three Awards of Excellence, one Award of Merit and seven Honorable Mentions.
Awards of Excellence were in the Website category for the school division’s website, in the News Release category for the press release announcing Superintendent Dr. Michele Mitchell’s appointment as superintendent and the Excellence in Writing category for the feature story profiling Warwick High School Boys Basketball Coach LaTasia Robinson as the first female to coach boys basketball in the Peninsula District.
The NNPS behavior matrix graphic received an Award of Merit in the Infographic category.
