She brings a global perspective to her classroom that she earned through work in the Peace Corps before becoming a teacher.

The 2022–23 Elementary Teacher of the Year is Barbara Brinker, a reading specialist at Newsome Park Elementary, with 32 years of experience. Ms. Brinker works with first and second graders and says that these early grades are “where the magic happens” as students become readers.

Tiffanie Smith was honored as High School Teacher of the Year. Ms. Smith is a career and technical education teacher at Heritage High School with 19 years of experience. Ms. Smith serves as activities director at Heritage and sponsors Future Business Leaders of America, the National Technical Honor Society, the BayPort Student-Run Credit Union and the Student Ambassadors.
