
2022 Newport News Public Schools Teachers of the Year announced
Outstanding teachers from each school in Newport News were honored at a Teacher of the Year banquet held in May. From this pool of accomplished educators, three finalists were chosen, and one of those honorees was chosen to serve as the citywide teacher of the year.
Emily Andrews was named Middle School Teacher of the Year and Citywide Teacher of the Year. Ms. Andrews serves at Hines Middle School as a social studies teacher with seven years of experience. She brings a global perspective to her classroom that she earned through work in the Peace Corps before becoming a teacher.
The 2022–23 Elementary Teacher of the Year is Barbara Brinker, a reading specialist at Newsome Park Elementary, with 32 years of experience. Ms. Brinker works with first and second graders and says that these early grades are “where the magic happens” as students become readers.
Tiffanie Smith was honored as High School Teacher of the Year. Ms. Smith is a career and technical education teacher at Heritage High School with 19 years of experience. Ms. Smith serves as activities director at Heritage and sponsors Future Business Leaders of America, the National Technical Honor Society, the BayPort Student-Run Credit Union and the Student Ambassadors.
Administrators of the Year announced
In an afternoon of firsts, Newport News Public Schools (NNPS) honored building administrators in an informal ceremony following the Newport News Education Foundation’s inaugural golf tournament.
Administrator of the Year honors will join the annual celebrations of Teacher and Exceptional Support Staff of the Year as a validation of NNPS employees’ exceptional efforts to serve students and the community.
