Chassard named city-wide Teacher of the Year

AshleyChassard-NNPSAshley Chassard has been named Newport News Public Schools’ Teacher of the Year. Chassard teaches Menchville High School’s research class, an exciting lab science class that gives students hands-on experience in laboratory research and scientific reporting. This year, students concentrated on research projects exploring the regenerative effects of the steroid MSI-1436 on zebrafish with Parkinson’s Disease symptoms and collecting and monitoring data regarding bacteria counts in the Lower James River. The class has been touted as strong preparation for competitive undergraduate research opportunities.

As Teacher of the Year, Chassard will vie for regional honors.

BayPort student-run credit union partnership earns state recognition

NNPS The Virginia Department of Education State Business and Industry Partnership Award has been presented to BayPort Credit Union and Newport News Public Schools. Their collaboration to enhance personal finance education with student-staffed credit unions in 10 schools has been named the winner of the 2020 Creating Excellence Business Partnership Award.

BayPort offers Newport News students lessons in financial literacy and work-based learning opportunities exploring finance careers. The partnership also provides hands-on experiences, including work in the student-run credit unions, mentoring, summer programs and volunteering.

Two student tellers at Heritage High were hired to fulltime positions with BayPort. The student credit union at Heritage was one of the first schools to open and has been named BayPort’s “Most Outstanding Student-Run Credit Union.”

Across Hampton Roads, BayPort sponsors 57 school-based credit unions. Heritage is one of three Newport News high schools participating in the program. Denbigh High and Woodside High also offer the opportunity, along with Crittenden, Dozier, and Hines middle schools, and Carver, Kiln Creek, Lee Hall and Saunders elementary schools.

The Creating Excellence awards are presented annually to recognize exemplary programs and partnerships that promote excellence in career and technical education.

Engineering Design Challenge

NNPS EngineeringNewport News Public Schools earned recognition from the Virginia Board of Education Exemplar Performance School Awards for division-wide innovative practices in its Engineering Design Challenges, a partnership with local science and engineering businesses and agencies that creates opportunities for students to participate in team-based collaborations to solve real-world problems using STEM skills.
