There’s a house for everybody, in every price range. That’s what Susan Giordano, principal broker of Reliance Realty, believes, and she loves helping people find that home.
“It’s important to me not to max out a couple, for example,” Giordano says. “I’ve built my business on referrals because I’m honest and ethical. It’s turned out to be very rewarding to help people.”
Giordano came into the real estate business in 1991. Formerly in the educational field, she decided to pursue a new career after her children had grown and moved out. She loved working with people, children and decorating, and realized real estate was a way to combine all of those passions. She bought Reliance Realty, which now consists of three separate entities: Reliance Realty, Incorporated; Reliance Realty and Property Management; and Reliance Realty Referrals.
There are 17 agents with the company, all of whom are quite seasoned, Giordano says.
“If you’re a first time home buyer, we’ll walk you through the process, ‘holding your hand,’” she says. “If you’re an investor, we have people who specialize in that, as well as short sales. The key is to connect with the right agent who can fulfill all your needs.”
The most challenging aspect of Giordano’s job is facing constant mortgage changes, she says, adding that mortgage requirements are getting stricter, making it more difficult for people to qualify for a home. As a result, agents must be more creative in working with terms.
As for real estate in Newport News, the outlook is a positive one.
“I think Newport News is up and coming,” Giordano says. “The areas are improving, and I’m seeing new construction everywhere, especially downtown. The city officials are putting money back into the city and improving it, which will bring the values of the houses up.”
Giordano is also a broker in Florida and spends her time working between both areas. When she’s not helping people purchase their dream home, Giordano loves to travel, especially on cruise ships. She also has a unique hobby.
“I take the pods that fall off of palm trees, and I sand and stain them, then I paint murals on them,” she says. “I get them off of my trees in Florida. I also like stained glass and other kinds of painting. I’m a very artsy-craftsy person.”
Giordano has three children and eight grandchildren, who she describes as the highlight of her life. One child is a teacher in Hawaii, one is a firefighter in Suffolk and one is a welding inspector with Newport News Shipbuilding.
