As Commissioner of Revenue, I believe local government should be more than accessible — it should be active, responsive, and rooted in real relationships with the people we serve.
Every form we process, whether it’s a business license, vehicle registration or tax relief application, represents someone’s investment in this city. And I believe taxpayers should be treated like stakeholders, and in many ways, investors in how well their government performs.
That’s why we offer ongoing, community-centered programs designed to bring clarity, access and support to every corner of Newport News, whether you’re starting a business, raising a family, planning for retirement or helping others do the same.
Business support
BOSSES (Businesses Operating for Successful Stronger Economies): Get answers on starting, operating or growing your business, from licensing and taxes to compliance and city resources. We work closely with Newport News Economic Development and the Small Business Development Center to provide free, public workshops tailored to you.
Community engagement
Commissioners & Cans: Our statewide food and fund drive, launched right here in Newport News, brings offices and communities together to support Virginia’s food banks. If your church or synagogue, school or business wants to host a drive, we’ll help you make it happen.
Youth empowerment
Commissioner’s CASH (Children Achieving Success through Hardwork): This interactive workshop helps youth set goals and learn planning skills using custom-designed “cash” worksheets. Perfect for classrooms, summer camps and after-school programs.
Small business and workforce connection
LEED (Labor, Education, Entrepreneurship, Diversity): I regularly tour local businesses and organizations to hear directly how tax policy is affecting Newport News workers and employers. If you’d like me to visit your location or share feedback from your industry, reach out. We’re always listening.
Senior outreach
TIPS (Tax Information Preparing Seniors): Designed for residents 65+ and their caregivers, these sessions walk through tax relief options available through the city and answer questions about real estate, vehicles and income thresholds.
Accessibility matters
Our building now features a fully accessible front entrance ramp, meaning no resident ever has to enter through the back door again. Dignity and access go hand in hand.
