Described by founder and CEO Jeff Johnson as “a new entity,” STEMComm Ventures “exists to really bridge the gap between idea and impact.”
Following Johnson’s most recent work — government contracting — STEMComm Ventures came into being in January 2023. “The arc of my background spans from chemistry and manufacturing through nonprofits, entrepreneurship and corporate leadership roles for more than two and a half decades,” says Johnson. To him, combining his multiple career backgrounds created a new “comprehensive approach of my idea to impact, and that’s how STEMComm Ventures was born.”
Since its creation, STEMComm Ventures has been growing into a mindfully built and diverse network of entrepreneurs and founders to envision a more positive future through technology. By connecting businesses in their early stages with dynamic ideas and approaches, products and services that may only exist in one’s dreams can potentially become reality.
Programs offered by STEMComm include entrepreneurial workshops and mentorship, comprehensive training and education programs and financial planning. Proximity to diverse stakeholders and dedication to representation can also increase the impact and reach of the technology associated with the consultancy.
Among the many aspects of STEMComm Ventures, Johnson favors “the impact it can have on individuals’ lives. Not only the people for whom we’re developing the innovation, but if you looked at STEMComm, you could see we also work with entrepreneurs at various stages. Particularly, those who are underrepresented entrepreneurs and women who are leading deep tech, high tech, high growth companies to the commercial marketplace.
“Again, let me underscore: we work with everybody. But we really are going after the fact that less than 4 percent of equity and venture goes to those who are underrepresented and women who are leading these tech companies,” Johnson adds.
STEMComm Ventures’ presence was more than just felt at the NASA Assistive Technologies Startup Summit in Alexandria, Virginia, in December 2024. “We were uniquely positioned to lead this,” Johnson says of the three-part national summit. The event connected experts, stakeholders and other individuals with assistive technology to help people with disabilities. Johnson highlights the summit’s opportunity to bring together disabled individuals “directly with entrepreneurs looking to lead high-tech companies that produce products and services for them.” By connecting these entrepreneurs with those who could benefit from their ideas in motion, lives can be changed for the better.
The consultancy also hosts multiple other events, including a Diversity in Tech summit and a Sustainable Tech Challenge.
“We are about delivering impact,” says Johnson of STEMComm Ventures. “What’s really important to me is that we develop technology that matters and makes a difference. It’s not about just the financial success of the technology, but it’s the success around delivering impact to those who need it. So, it’s technology and innovation for good.”
Working both nationally and in Hampton Roads, Johnson enjoys the many options and activities the Virginia Peninsula has to offer, especially the beaches, local music scene and of course, the people.
