Follow the trail of sprinkles, sticky smiles and grandparents with sugar-free vanilla in hand. You’ll eventually arrive at one of the four sweetFrog locations owned by Vibha Madan, the woman many locals simply call the Queen of FroYo. But this colorful world of frozen yogurt, family nights and Dole Whip dreams started with humble beginnings.
“We opened our first store in Newport News in 2011,” Madan says. “This was when frozen yogurt was at its prime. It was probably the 18th store in the whole brand.”
Back then, sweetFrog was a small, fast-growing Richmond-born franchise with a big heart. Today, the brand has more than 300 stores — and Madan owns four of them.
Yorktown opened in 2012, Suffolk in 2013, and after years of delays and “perfect space” near-misses, Hampton finally opened in 2024. “We tried to do Hampton for a long time,” Madan says with a laugh. “It just didn’t happen until 2024.”
When the world halted in 2020, sweetFrog stores had to close temporarily, but Madan’s mobile yogurt trucks became a bright spot during the darkest days. “When the pandemic hit, everything shut down,” she says. “But the trucks worked beautifully.”
Masked and gloved, Madan’s team drove through neighborhoods handing out joy, one contactless cup at a time. Families waited at the ends of driveways, grateful for a moment of normalcy. The trucks remain wildly popular today, appearing at birthdays, school events, church festivals, corporate picnics and even huge gatherings like Riverside Regional Medical Center’s 3,000-person event. “It’s beautiful to see how quickly we can get people served,” she says.
And if you feel it’s too rainy or cold to go out, sweetFrog now delivers, too.
sweetFrog has a flavor for every generation. Kids swarm the cake batter and cotton candy machines. Teens chase adventurous blends. Adults love cheesecake and chocolate peanut butter. Seniors? “Sugar-free vanilla is their number one,” Madan says. “It’s their go-to.”
But there’s one treat that unites everyone: the vegan Dole pineapple whip, also known as the legendary Disney Dole Whip, a wildly popular pineapple-flavored soft-serve frozen treat beloved since its 1984 debut at Disneyland.
And then comes Madan’s favorite reveal: “Dole pineapple at sweetFrog is the same product you get at Disney — the exact same one! Just without the price Disney charges.”
At any time, she says, “We have 14-16 yogurt flavors, and with the center twist flavor, the total number of flavors available is between 21 and 23. We have more than 100 topping choices, which include fresh fruit, popping boba, cheesecake bites, brownies, cookie dough, chocolate toppings, nuts and, of course, a whole array of gummy toppings for kids with hot fudge and hot caramel.”
Your cup is customized to you and can be different each time you visit.
Many customers don’t know that “FROG” in sweetFrog stands for Fully Rely On God, a reflection of the company’s original mission. “That’s where it came from,” Madan says. “You’ll still see it on our shirts.”
The brand was designed with children in mind, led by frog siblings Cookie and Scoop (who sometimes show up in full costume). Today, kids still adore the characters and the upbeat, bright atmosphere.
Ask Madan about her dream for the future, and her eyes light up. “If money were no object, I would want to market the benefits of frozen yogurt,” she says. “And I’d make sweetFrog a place where kids and families can do crafts, spend time together and make connections.”
Madan is well on her way. Her stores host craft nights, puppet shows, themed parties and seasonal events. And it’s not just kids. One store hosts a lively group of seniors who gather every Tuesday night to play games and enjoy yogurt. “They’re such a big part of our community,” she says.
Madan’s family has grown up inside the stores. “My older son’s first steps were at sweetFrog,” she says. “People at school call us the sweetFrog family.”
Her sons, Krishiv and Aarav, are now in middle and high school, and her husband Derek remains her strongest supporter. Her staff, many of whom started at 16, often return to tell her how the work ethic they learned at sweetFrog helped to shape their futures.
For Madan, sweetFrog isn’t just a dessert. “It’s more than coming for a treat,” she says. “It’s spending time with each other. Making that connection.”
And that’s exactly what she’s built. One cup at a time.
