Synethia White has been appointed Newport News’ first community violence prevention manager, marking a step forward in the city’s commitment to enhancing community safety and fostering a culture of peace. White brings 20 years of experience in community outreach, conflict resolution and program development. She will oversee developing and implementing comprehensive violence prevention strategies, collaborate with local organizations, and engage community members to create sustainable solutions. White earned her bachelor’s degree in sociology with a minor in human services from Old Dominion University. She also received a certificate in nonprofit management from Tidewater Community College. Prior to joining the City of Newport News team, she served as director of strategic initiatives for Cities United. She also held various roles with the City of Hampton and worked for the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board and Virginia Commonwealth University.

Aux Delices has been named among the winners of the North American Ice Cream Association’s 2024 National Ice Cream Awards, recognizing its exceptional frozen treats. Hundreds of ice cream professionals and aspiring dessert entrepreneurs from across the nation gathered for “Conecon,” the industry’s largest event in the United States. A highlight of the event was the association’s ice cream flavor and quality competitions, in which Aux Delices earned a Red Ribbon for its Classic Chocolate ice cream. The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula unveiled new tools and technology at its technology-filled Innovation Lab thanks to a $25,000 grant from Cox Communications during a ceremony held in November. The updated lab is located at the club’s Peninsula Unit in Newport News. The Cox Innovation Labs are the cornerstone of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Club Tech program, providing students access to curriculum to advance their computer literacy skills. These labs also help bridge the digital divide for children without access to a computer or reliable internet connection at home. Sharyn Fox, associate in the municipal engineering department of AH Environmental, received a certificate of appreciation from Newport News City Council and a chairperson plaque for her eight years of service on the City of Newport News Planning Commission. Presenting the award to Fox was Michael Taylor, chair of the Newport News Planning Commission.
VersAbility Resources commemorated seven decades of service and community impact at its 70th Anniversary Gala, hosted in October at Mariners’ Museum. The evening raised more than $138,000, which will directly benefit the organization’s diverse programs and services.
