The Mary M. Torggler Fine Arts Center at Christopher Newport University received the Southeastern Museums Conference (SEMC) Gold Award for its exhibition, A Grand Menagerie: The Sculpture of Anna Hyatt Huntington. The exhibition brought together nearly 90 of Hyatt Huntington’s iconic sculptures from 30 museums across the country. She and her husband founded The Mariners’ Museum and Park in Newport News, also home to her famous Lions, which stand watch over the Lions Bridge. This honor recognizes exhibitions with a cost exceeding $100,000 to mount. SEMC is the regional museum association representing museums across the Southeast. Recipients of the awards were judged by an appointed jury of museum professionals across the region who specialize in curatorial studies and exhibition design. Holly Koons, executive director of the arts center, will accept the award at the Southeastern Museums Conference in Louisiana.
A new exhibit, Reflections: Surface and Substance, will open with a preview celebration for patrons on Friday, November 1. This group exhibition examines the ways materials that reflect light, ranging from glitter and glass to mirrors, crystals and highly polished surfaces, are used in contemporary art. The works explore how reflected light may render visible or distort objects, or aid or impede both vision and comprehension. Presenting work across media, including painting, sculpture, photography and video, the exhibition will explore a wide range of techniques and methodologies. The exhibition includes 15 contemporary artists from the United States, Europe and Asia, and includes a wide array of works ranging from painting and sculpture to photography and video.
Christopher Newport University (CNU) and Riverside College of Health Sciences (RCHS) have established an innovative 3+2 dual-degree nursing program partnership to allow students to spend three years at Christopher Newport, immersed in a rigorous liberal arts education, followed by two years at RCHS, getting specialized nursing training. RC Miller has been appointed a director of the Langley Federal Credit Union Board, following his tenure as associate director. Miller brings experience in legal, product counseling, consumer regulations, technology, private equity and mergers and acquisitions (M&A). He has advised companies on regulatory matters, corporate governance, securities issues and transaction-related inquiries. His expertise includes reviewing and negotiating acquisition agreements, escrow agreements, paying agent agreements and various other transactional documents. He also has experience navigating the business and legal complexities associated with starting and growing companies in consumer-facing markets.
Vanetta Rather has been named marketing director of Regent of Newport News, the newly remolded luxury assisted living facility at 741 Thimble Shoals Boulevard.
Newport News Public Art Foundation (NNPAF) dedicated its newest sculpture, Starfinder, in September on the grounds of Tech Center Research Park. Sculpted by Owen Morrel, this work is the 23rd piece of public art offered by NNPAF. Dr. Daimei Zhu has joined the engineering faculty of Virginia Peninsula Community College (VPCC). Zhu, who is from south China, comes to VPCC by way of Utah and Michigan. Her interest in engineering stem from her high school days, and she was exposed to all types of engineering while in college in China. She’s been in the United States since 2011. Her background in electrical and computer engineering offers growth for VPCC.
