Tidewater Family Dentistry is a comprehensive preventative, cosmetic and restorative dental practice offering compassionate care to patients of all ages on the Virginia Peninsula. Owner and dentist Dr. John Randall Owen aims to build open and honest relationships with patients and foster a comfortable and family-friendly environment. These goals are more than just words — they are foundational values born out of a bond between two dentists.
The practice was opened in 2001 by Dr. Matt Dollar, son of Dr. James Dollar, with a mission to follow in his father’s footsteps and provide his community with unparalleled dental care. Sadly, Dr. Matt Dollar passed away a few years later. Continuing his son’s mission and upholding his legacy, Dr. James Dollar purchased the practice in 2007.
Around this time, Owen was experiencing a loss of his own — the passing of his father, a family physician. Growing up, Owen watched his father treat patients young and old with compassion and respect, inspiring him to pursue a career in which he could do the same.
In 2019, Owen purchased the practice and began working alongside Dr. James Dollar. The two dentists, connecting over their shared experiences and treatment philosophies, built both a professional and personal bond, shaping the practice to be what it is today.
“Dr. Dollar and I were meant to come together at this time,” says Owen. “We have so much in common — our approach to dentistry, our goals, our personalities and our life experiences. Together, we were able to turn Tidewater Family Dentistry into a place that prioritizes family values and patient-doctor relationships built on trust.”
Today, Tidewater Family Dentistry’s service offerings include preventative dentistry, such as routine dental checkups; restorative dentistry, such as crowns, bridges, fillings and dental implant restoration; cosmetic dentistry, such as teeth whitening and dental bonding; dental emergency care; periodontal disease care; pediatric dentistry; dentures and appliances and more. With each of these service offerings, Owen and his team aim to use the latest advancements in dental technology whenever possible for a treatment experience that is comfortable and seamless. The Tidewater Dentistry team understands that for many patients — children and adults alike — going to the dentist can be an anxiety-inducing experience. The entire team does everything in its power to ensure patients feel comfortable and confident throughout each step of the treatment process. This commitment to compassionate dental care is evident in the support they receive from patients.
Being certain each patient is given the attention and time is paramount with Owen. In a growing community — and growing patients at the practice — Tidewater Family Dentistry is welcoming three new dentists to better serve its patients: Dr. Joyce Forbes, Dr. Ilona Sibirtsev and Dr. Karina Bethea. Each of these providers brings unique training, perspectives and specialties to Tidewater Family Dentistry.
