Zenya Yoga and Massage Studio offers a relaxing escape from reality that feels new, special and different.
Cortney Cunningham, owner and founder of Zenya Yoga and Massage Studio, says she saw a need and an opportunity in Port Warwick and decided to follow her passion. “Port Warwick is an artsy community and it felt like the perfect fit for a yoga studio,” she says.
Cunningham opened her studio doors in 2005, and the studio has flourished in the Newport News community since then. “I created the whole concept, Cunningham says. “We had the building designed knowing that Zenya would be here. There were very few yoga studios back then; it was the perfect fit.”
Cunningham moved to Newport News in 1991, when her father was stationed in the area through the military. “I’ve been in the fitness business since I was 20,” she says. Since then, in addition to Zenya, she has opened five Curve locations and a CrossFit Stimulus location. Cunningham enjoys the variety and believes there is something for everyone. “I’ve been able to reach so many people. With Zenya, Curve and CrossFit, there is something for you!”
Although Zenya only has one location, it offers a huge variety of services to the Newport News community. There are14 faculty members who are the “best of the best” at what they are teaching. “We have 30 classes a week. They are all levels, but we love beginners. We want to help improve their confidence,” Cunningham says. “We also have a massage business and do facials as well.”
One of its unique offerings is a prenatal program. This includes a three-week natural childbirth class, and Cunningham says new mothers are coming in every month.
Another very popular program the studio has maintained since 2012 is its yoga teacher training program. “The teachers in this program are truly experts,” says Cunningham, “We’ve sold out our yoga teacher training program for six years.” Both a 200-hour certification program and 300-hour certification program are offered. The next 200-hour program begins in April of 2019, and the next 300-hour program begins in December of 2018.
Something Cunningham wants everyone to know is that the studio offers weekly community classes for free. “It’s our karma, our way of giving back to the community,” she says. Anyone can stop in for these free classes on Saturdays at 11:30 am. During the summertime a secondary free class is also held weekly. “And on Sundays of the summer at 8 a.m. we do yoga on the Square,” Cunningham says.
Everyone at Zenya would love for those who have never experienced yoga to stop by and try it. “The first class is always free,” Cunningham says. She explains that a 30-day plan is available for new yogis, granting access to unlimited classes during that period. “People don’t know the benefits of practicing yoga. It changes you on the inside and outside. The benefits that come from a mind-body class are astounding,” Cunningham says.
Zenya plans to continue offering the best services possible for the Newport News community and hopes that everyone will come and experience it for themselves. “Bring a mat and bring a friend,” says Cunningham with a smile.
