Johnny and Terrie Newell started Commonwealth Exterminating Company in October of 1999 and have grown their extermination services over the past 21 years. “Commonwealth Exterminating is a locally owned family operation serving more than 25,000 customers for moisture control, dehumidifiers, pest, termite, rodents, roaches, mice, all wood-destroying insects and bed bug needs. We also have licensed contractors, electricians and a master carpenter to make repairs,” says their son and company general manager, Cory Newell. Cory joined the team in 2007. The Newells have lived in Newport News dating back to the start of Fort Eustis Camp, and cannot imagine serving a better community than the one which they call home.

Commonwealth Exterminating has 25 people on its team, and its loyal employees are like family. The company prides itself on the adaptability and speed which its team has when meeting clients’ needs. “It’s a whirlwind of a day, every day, and the days are always different, but our team is ready,” Cory says. Both Johnny and Terrie report to work every day to best communicate and work with their experienced staff.

The team prides itself on staying current on science and approaches to handling pest needs. “We follow the leading science from our friend, Dr. Dini Miller, the world’s leading entomologist, focusing specifically on bed bugs and roaches, to combine decades of experience with current science for the best results,” Cory says.

Commonwealth Exterminating is looking toward a future of continuing to provide great service as it expands in size, services and technology. “We are hoping to buy our first building and to continue our online access, servicing our customers,” Cory says.

When asked about his favorite part of the job, the general manager had lots to talk about. “All of us would say we are happiest when the chemical and science work well together and the customer is elated that their bugs are gone. We are problem solvers, and our goal is to take care of customer needs,” Cory says. The team also takes pride and satisfaction in being able to reduce the community’s pest populations. It is important to teach homeowners and housing managers how to combine science and logic to combat pests.

When the Newell family is not working, Johnny and Terrie enjoy spending time with their dogs Molly and McKenzie, and their grandkids, Jacob and Evie. Cory Newell stays busy as a clinical chaplain at the Sentara and Bon Secours hospitals. “I also work for Reverend Cory Newell and Associates, Wedding Officiants,” Newell says. He marries more than 600 couples each year, and spends as much time as possible with his husband, Justin.

Commonwealth Exterminating is ready for whatever pest issues come its way. “We are grateful that our neighbors and friends have celebrated our family’s American dream by using our services for more than two decades.” Cory says.
