Sometimes, people end up in the exact right career. They are excited by it, passionate about it and dedicated to it.

That is exactly what happened when Kaéra Mims discovered the field of real estate. It was the perfect fit for her when she started in 2003, and today she adores it just as much. “I love helping people, and I’m passionate about being a Realtor®,” says Mims, 38. “I love helping people buy and sell homes.”

Mims, a Hampton native, started her career as a real estate assistant in 2003. She obtained her license in 2006, and from there she has been on an upward trajectory. After working at several local real estate firms, she began her job as success coach and associate broker at Abbitt Realty in 2019.

“It’s more than I could have ever imagined,” she says. “It’s an opportunity to do what I love.”

Mims, also a licensed broker, is part of the leadership team at Abbitt, and in her role, trains and coaches real estate agents. She uses her experience and skills to guide agents who want to learn how to be better. Currently, about 25 to 35 percent of her time is spent in sales, and her other time is consumed with training agents.

“When I joined Abbitt, I knew I had made the best decision,” says Mims, a mother of two school-age children.

Mims came to the field of real estate at a young age. After college, her mother gave her two options: the military or a 9-to-5 job to pay her bills. She had a friend who worked for a realtor who convinced her to try the field. She did, and she has never looked back.

Mims has succeeded on so many levels, from being the Virginia Peninsula Association of Realtor’s (VPAR) Realtor of the Year to becoming president-elect for VPAR. She is involved on every level, from local groups to state groups. She graduated from the Virginia Realtor Leadership Academy, which she calls “a life-changing event.” She writes a blog and thrives on maintaining relationships with clients and co-workers. She has burst through the typical role of a real estate agent and shaped it into something defined by boundless energy and personality.

“I love people,” Mims says. “Real estate is an avenue where I can do that. When I sell a house, I love all the people, stories and relationships behind the home. It affords me the ability to do something I’m passionate about.”

Although Mims says that she is an introvert, she is bubbly, engaging and focused. She describes herself as a Type A person who wants to do everything right. She is inquisitive, asking lots of questions to educate herself and to quench her curiosity. She is an only child, born to a mother who was a talented seamstress and a father who worked two jobs and always told her the second job was to help pay for all the extras for her. Her parents set an example of industriousness and perseverance. Mims exudes the traits of an overachiever and perfectionist.

“My parents instilled in me a very strong work ethic,” Mims says. “My dad always went above and beyond to set himself apart. My mom always has been kind of extra, making the most of everything. I am the perfect combination of the two.”

Mims is proud of her success, but attributes it in great part to the mentors she has had over the years. Achievement is almost her way of thanking them for all they have done to propel her career. For example, becoming president of VPAR, she says, is her chance to return the favor.

“A lot of people poured into me. This is my chance to give back to the association,” she says.

As for her future, Mims is sold on real estate. She has found her calling, and she plans on riding the wave of success. She constantly works to improve herself and find new ways of doing business and connecting with people.

Mims, who loves traveling, reading and being a mom, wants to take advantage of all opportunities that life affords her.

“I want to get every drop of the best things in life I can,” she says. “All of it. If I can do it and it’s possible, then I want to do it.”
