Local to the 757 his entire life, Jack Keller has been providing personal, reliable painting experiences for customers since 2022.
Although painting commercial spaces now occupies most of his time, it wasn’t always that way. Keller studied political science and criminology at Virginia Peninsula Community College (then Thomas Nelson Community College) and Old Dominion University, although he says he wished he had studied “something in finance” to prepare him for his life now.
In his early 20s, Keller’s best friend Jordan recommended working with him at Sherwin-Williams, a major American paint and coatings company, as a sales associate. Keller “got hooked” on the work and after some time with Sherwin-Williams, decided to start his own business, Legacy Painting.
“To start a business is fairly simple,” Keller says. He had the vision, obtained the licensing and insurance and he was on his way, creating his business all on his own. Since then, as of January 1, 2025, Legacy Painting has a new warehouse space.
Keller’s team may be small, but it’s mighty. With 10 employees and six work vehicles, the team maintains a working relationship with Sherwin-Williams, now a supplier of Legacy’s paint.
“We’ll pretty much do it all,” Keller says. “It’s the people who matter most. I enjoy working with our team, all of our painters and the networking and building relationships.”
Although his career centers around it, he didn’t love painting at first. “I’m very impatient,” he says with a smile. When he first started, Keller set into it with hopes his entrepreneurship would open up more time for his personal life. “It’s changed over the years,” he says.
His most unusual project? “We just painted two industrial scissor lifts; that was the first time we had ever done something like that,” Keller says. “We definitely have some challenging projects on the horizon. We’re doing a wedding pavilion in Charles City with lots of tall areas to paint.”
Keller lives with his girlfriend, Skyler, and their mini Golden Doodle, Murphy. When he’s not crunching numbers and juggling projects, the couple takes Murphy for walks and dines on dog-friendly restaurant patios.
Speaking of this area, Keller says, “I was born and raised here, so I really like employing people who are local, and it is important to me to take care of our customers. I try to provide a solution for home owners,” he says. “We do our best to satisfy our customers, making sure we can be as easy to work with as possible.”
Legacy Painting’s primary focus is customer service. Keller is passionate about building relationships within his community. Most of his time is spent on the sales side, which allows him to put emphasis on clear communication and solid customer relationships.
“Creating a relationship with our customers is important to us. We want our work to be a pleasurable experience, especially having contractors in their home,” he says.
Keller hopes to expand with more equipment, potential apprentice training programs for painters and maybe even a new office space. Legacy Painting is building its own legacy, dedicating itself to quality craftsmanship, unwavering trust with its customers and transformative results.
