Newport News Schools update – November 2020

Carver first grade author earns top honors in WHRO PBS KIDS Writers Contest

Grayson Zimmerman, a student at Carver Elementary, earned first place for first grade entries in the 2020 WHRO PBS KIDS Writers Contest. He will have the opportunity to share his story, “The Magical Adventures of Grayson and Bubba,” on a DVD that will be produced as part of a virtual celebration of contest winners at a later date.

When his story was written, Grayson was a first grader in Carolyn Harris’ classroom. Harris, an alumna of the Eastern Virginia Writing Project at the College of William & Mary and an accomplished teacher of primary writing, has taught contest-winning writers in three previous years and says, “I am so grateful to WHRO for all of the literacy opportunities they provide to my students.”

The PBS KIDS Writers Contest is part of PBS KIDS Raising Readers and is funded in part by a Ready to Learn grant, in a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Education and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

School supply drive successfully connects students with the tools they need

While school may have started virtually, the generosity of our community is very real! In response to the Newport News Public School’s Together 2020 School Supply Drive, generous community members donated supplies and money to provide approximately 600 families with the pens, paper, erasers, rulers, notebooks, crayons, pencils and so many other supplies they will need this school year.

Newport News Public Schools offers heartfelt thanks to individual donors, as well as to our community partners who contributed supplies or funding, including:

  • Newport News Education Foundation
  • Piggly Wiggly, Newport News location, whose customers and employees helped us “stuff the bus” with more than 250 bags of supplies
  • Newport News Woman’s Club
  • United Jewish Community of the Virginia Peninsula
  • Canon Virginia, Inc.
  • Hilton Christian Church
  • Crossroads Community Church
  • TGIFriday, Newport News location
