SERVPRO® of Newport News: A helpful presence in stressful times

When disaster strikes your home or place of business, it jolts you out of your sense of normalcy and replaces it with uncertainty and trauma. SERVPRO of Newport News recognizes the delicacy of these moments and seeks to clean up and restore areas affected by unexpected disasters so that individuals can return to their day-to-day lives as soon as possible.

SERVPRO specializes in the cleanup and restoration of both residential and commercial properties after events such as water damage, fires, smoke damage mold and more. Together, husband and wife team, Chip and Janet Gilbert, operate the Newport News franchise, providing 24/7 clean up and restoration services to the region.

After researching SERVPRO, Chip decided in 2014 that he was ready to jump into the world of business owning and purchased the SERVPRO franchise. “I’ve never worked harder in my life,” he says about owning this business. “It is important work that is rewarding in so many ways. I love to do it.” The heart for serving the community around the Gilberts comes naturally. Janet used to be a practicing nurse and shares her husband’s affinity for working hard to help others.

Due to its franchise business style, SERVPRO of Newport News is a locally owned and operated business with all the resources of a larger national company. The multitude of advanced restoration and cleanup include moisture detection and measurement equipment, drying equipment, water extraction tools, odor removal technology and sanitizing agents. These resources allow SERVPRO of Newport News to have employees on-call around the clock to help out when disasters strike at the most inconvenient times.

“I have so many jobs I am proud of,” Chip says about the business’s long record of impressive clean-ups and restorations. “There was a 14-story building with water damage all the way through that we worked on.”

While large multi-story buildings are a significant part of the Newport News business, residential clean-ups and restorations are just as common. Because of the restoration and clean up demands, the Gilberts recently decided to purchase a second SERVPRO franchise on the southside and plan to relocate to a larger building to allow for comfortable growth and better service.

When asked about any further plans to expand Chip says, “We are focusing on what we have going on now. I like to follow a quote from Raving Fans that says ‘identify what you’re going to be good at and be great at it.”

This attitude of determination and dedication is extended to every cleanup and restoration project the Newport News team tackles. Each technician is highly trained to handle even the most difficult jobs regardless of size or scope.

Despite having a heavy workload and expanding the business, the Gilberts still take time to get away and relax. Chip likes to ride ATVs and enjoy the outdoors through a round of golf. The couple finds that spending time with family is the best way to unwind after a long day of helping others in the community.
